Freiburg
Freiburg is the "Capital of the Black Forest" and one of the sunniest cities in southern Germany. The city is located between the Black Forest and the Rhine valley and is home to one of the oldest universities in Germany, the University of Freiburg founded in 1457.
The city was founded in the 12th century as a free market town and it still keeps this charm with a daily market on the "Münsterplatz" (cathedral square) in the city centre. This is one of Freiburgs must-see attractions. The market is divided in two parts, on the northern side of the Münster you will find booths selling vegetables, fruit and the legendary Münsterwurst. On the southern side there are marketeers selling spices, wooden toys or other convenience goods.
The Münsterplatz is surrounded by historical buildings. One of them is the Historisches Kaufhaus (Historical Merchant's Hall) where the conference dinner will take place.
Historical Merchant's Hall
The Historical Merchant’s Hall is one the most impressive buildings around the Münster. With its red façade, it dominates the south side of the cathedral square.
It was built in the 14th century and renovated several times with bigger changes such as the addition of balconies and a changed facade. The front is decorated with sculptures. This kind of decoration can be found at many older houses if one pays attention during a walk through the city.
Freiburg's "Bächle"
Aside from the Münster, the "Bächle" are a second famous landmark of Freiburg. These little streams of water - Bächle is a local diminutive form of the German "Bach" meaning a stream or small river - can be found along streets in most of the old part of the city. The Bächle had been documented first in the 13th century and according to most historians, they were used as a water supply and for sewage as well as a resource for firefighters.
Nowadays they are popular with tourists and children - especially on a hot summer day. But take care not to step into a Bächle accidentally: according to local legend, in this case you will marry someone from Freiburg...
